  2. Scammed or Ripped: There are ways one can avoid being scammed or ripped in overly – crowded places. To avoid getting scammed, don’t get into bargaining instead walk into a fixed price shop, do not give alms to beggars, do not get into fake looking information centers, avoid buying trinkets and gemstones often sold on roadside of religious places, do not pay upfront for any service of any kind, always have GPRS with you, visit only known cafe houses and go by meter only if going by autorickshaws often found in small towns and villages. Best of all hire pre – paid taxis to avoid paying too much. And Exchange money only at Indian Bank ATM’s like State Bank of India, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank or Yes Bank. You can also visit the banks for the same.
  3. Visiting Hindu Temples or religious Places: If any of Hindu Temple or any other religious place in your list then you must take care some things. Before entering the place always remove shoes outside the monument/temple. Try to get special blessings given in the form of “ Special Darshan”. These prayers often include special prayers. However, this is not compulsory. You can take VIP entry to avoid huge crowds by paying $5 – $10 more. If you wish to donate in these religious places; then keep some change with you. Hire a temple guide to get real information about the temple.
  4. Drinking Water: Water can be quite contaminated in India. So, always get packaged drinking water. Some of best names include Bisleri, Kinley, Himalaya, Aquafina and such others. Even if you are travelling in winters; it’s good to keep oneself hydrated all the time. You can also carry electrolytes for cooler stomachs! Also, avoid spices like Ginger and Cardamom Indian tea.
  5. Money Matters: While you are in India; you need to carry cash even if you have a Travel Card with you all the time! So always keep Indian Rupees all the time. Try to avoid airport exchange counters if it is not necessary and can be avoided as airports give poor currency exchange rates. If you need more than INR 10,000 at a time; use a CITIBANK or YES BANK ATM for easy transactions.  10 rupees notes come very handy while in India, so always carry an entire wad of 10 rupees notes.
  6. Keep your passport safely: While travelling always keep your passport safely as there are pickpocketers all around; so keep it under wraps. You can either conceal it in your inner pocket or number lock travel pouch. Always keep photocopies of important documents like passport, credit cards and ID Cards.
  7. Transportation: Indian driving can make you go crazy, so avoid walking on the roads. Always walk on pavement and always hold hands of your kids while in crowded areas like markets or walk-ways. Try to take a ride in any of the Indian trains for a different experience; just avoid the food they give on trains as it can be quite spicy.
  8. Hotel Bookings: Try to book hotels pre – hand as they can be quite costly in tourist season. If you booking a 5-star hotel then its really not a worry but if you are looking for a budget hotel then you can tick OFF amenities like free toiletries, water bottles, extra pillows and bed sheets and even an assistance to carry your baggage to a hotel room. Bird Watching in Andaman

Bird Watching Guide Training Programme jointly organised by Forest and Tourism Department is underway. Shri M.S. Negi, IFS, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Principal Secretary (E&F) inaugurated the 5days “Bird Watching Guide Training Workshop” jointly organised by the Department of Environment and Forests and Andaman Tourism Department, A&N Administration on 31.05.2016 in presence of Smti. Ankita Mishra Bundela, IAS, Secretary (Tourism), at Mini Zoo Auditorium, Haddo.

Shri M.S. Negi, IFS, PCCF and Principal Secretary (E&F) in his inaugural address, appealed to all the participants to respect the Nature and understand about their surroundings. He underlined the importance of forests, wildlife and environment and the non destructive use of the resources for promoting ecotourism in the wilderness areas of the Islands for enhancing the livelihood options. He mentioned that this training workshop is organized with the objective of promoting Bird Watching in the islands which will pave way for creating more employment opportunities by developing qualified bird watchers to open a new chapter in eco-tourism business For Andaman Tour.

Smti Ankita Mishra Bundela, IAS, Secretary (Tourism) in her presidential address expressed her happiness for the overwhelming response from the participants for the training workshop and complimented the efforts of the forest officials in organizing the same. She informed that more such capacity building programs would be organised with joint efforts of both Tourism and Forest departments For Bird Watching in Andaman She urged the participants to have more dedication, passion, commitment and involvement for bird watching activities and urged them to make use of such training programs to improve their skills and knowledge on the subject. She also underlined the need to work out a business model for bird watching programs in the Islands to reap benefits on a sustainable basis.

The PCCF and the Secretary Andaman Tourism distributed the training kit, a bag containing field equipment’s and Bird book to the participants for developing their enthusiasm and passion in bird watching.

Dr. K. Ravichandran, IFS, Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) welcomed the gathering and gave a brief overview on the Bird Watching Guide Training Workshop. He mentioned that Andaman & Nicobar Islands with 284 birds species with high level of endemic, considerable number of restricted range species of birds, diverse habitat has great potential for bird watching as an ecotourism activity.

Shri Naveen Kumar P, IFS, Deputy Conservator of Forests (WL) proposed the vote of thanks to the dignitaries and the resource persons from ZSI, ANET and NCBS, Port Blair. A total of 31 persons are attending the training workshop and the group consists of unemployed youth, tourism operators and students.

LG Releases Books ‘Birds of Andaman And Nicobar Islands’ and ‘Reef Fishes of Andaman & Nicobar Islands’

Port Blair, May 28: Hon’ble Lt Governor, Lt Gen A K Singh (Retd), today released books titled ‘Birds of Andaman & Nicobar Islands’ and Reef Fishes of Andaman & Nicobar Islands’, published by Zoological Survey of India (ZSI), at a simple function at Raj Niwas. The Coffee Table Books on interesting birds and fish of the Islands have been published by ZSI as part of their Centenary year celebration. Both the books contain vast information of birds and fish of the Islands with pictorial representations in simple language with an aim to reach the common people.

In his brief address on the occasion, the Lt Governor complimented Zoological Survey of India for releasing the two books and for the important works being undertaken by them in the Islands. Stating that ZSI has a role to record, protect, adopt and conserve our flora & fauna, he suggested that besides its role of protection and conservation, ZSI should also work for creating awareness among the people. In this context, he observed that ZSI should publish and distribute pamphlets and show movies/audio video presentations in schools and colleges to generate awareness among the students. This will help them achieve their twin objectives of generating awareness and secondly achieve their prime objective of protecting the flora & fauna, he said.

Referring to Port Blair being selected as Smart City, he complimented the Chairperson of PBMC and her team, citizens of the Islands and thanked Hon’ble Prime Minister of India and Urban Development Minister for having reposed faith in the UT. He further said that this day is a historical and significant day in the history of the Islands, as today is the 133rd birth anniversary of Veer Sarvarkar. The Veer Savarkar Jyot will be unveiled today in National Memorial Cellular Jail by Shri Amit Shahji, President of BJP. This is a very good example of amalgamation of development, preservation of history, art & culture and environment protection, the LG observed.

In his address, Dr. Kalish Chander, Director, ZSI, GoI gave a detailed account of activities and functioning of ZSI. He said ZSI is one of the premier research institutions in India established by the erstwhile British Empire in 1916 at Kolkata and is celebrating 100 years of relentless services to the nation. He further said that ZSI will continue to do its best in the Centenary year to disseminate the knowledge acquired to bring a sense of awareness of the Islands wealth, which need to be conserved for the future generation.

Sr. Scientist, ZSI, Dr. K C Gopi gave a detail account of the two books published by the ZSI and released today.

Earlier, welcoming the chief guest and others, Dr. C Ragunathen, Deputy Director, ZSI informed that ZSI regional centre at Port Blair was established on 21st April 1977. During the last 40 years of research works, ZSI has recorded 9344 species, which contributes about 9.5% of Indian faunal diversity. The function concluded with the vote of thanks proposed by Scientist, ZSI, Dr. Sivaperamul.

Chairperson, PBMC, senior officers of the Administration and officers of various central government departments were present.

New Delhi/ Port Blair, May 22: President Pranab Mukherjee appointed Kiran Bedi as the new Lieutenant Governor of Union Territory of Puducherry on Sunday. A Rashtrapati Bhawan communique said here the appointment would come into force from the time she assumes office.

Currently, Lt Gen A.K. Singh (retd) holds the charge in addition to being Lieutenant Governor of Andaman & Nicobar Islands. He was given the charge in July 2014 after the Narendra Modi Government removed Virendra Kataria, former Punjab Pradesh Congress chief, from the post.

In the just concluded elections, the Congress-DMK combine won majority in the 30-member state Assembly, with the Congress winning 15 and the DMK 2 seat.
